Enjoy
the stunning views from the bridge - the only bridge in Britain with
a church at both ends. The boathouses sit between several riverside
pubs and restaurants. On weekends many rowers can be seen practising
for the boating season which takes place throughout the spring and
summer months. Putne, a thriving shopping area, is only a few minutes
walk over Putney Bridge. The area is famous for The Putney Debates
which took place in St Mary's Church during the English Civil war.
These debates formed the basis for English Democracy and the foundation
of the American Constitution. There is a Visitors' Centre, Riverside
Cafe and numerous restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets within
a few minutes walk, as well as several supermarkets, banks and almost
all major retail outlets. In the summer months it is possible
to take the Water Bus from Putney Pier down the river to Westminster
and beyond.
